I don’t think my bit is right for my horse (how to tell?)?
I have a 7 year old Quarter Horse mare who is very soft in the mouth and has never really liked the bit from the first day she wore it. Lots of opening and closing her mouth especially when pressure is applied. Right now I have a basic sweet-iron snaffle bit that have worked with a couple other fussy mouthed horses I’ve helped to train definitely not the case with this mare. We had her teeth floated and checked and the equine dentist cleared her for starting in the bit. She is predominantly a western horse but also rides english without complaints if that helps. Any suggestions or advice are welcomed!! Thanks 
Thank you I think I’ll try a French link. I don’t have a trainer really so its been kinda trail and error. I also didn’t know the sweet iron is a heavy bit or that some horses mouths have sensitive roofs. You all have been very helpful
Is this the only bit you’ve tried? You may try a double-broke snaffle (a French link). The roof of her mouth may be overly sensitive, and the snaffle is causing her distress.
Does she have a thick tongue? Is the roof of her mouth low? Sometimes the conformation of the mouth will be your key to finding the right bit. If there’s not a lot of room in her mouth, you may try something thinner (which will also mean more breaks, which means you will have to have an educated hand to do it).
If there’s a tack shop local to you, go in and investigate what types of bits they have. There’s probably someone knowledgeable who can help you, and most shops will let you take the bit to try. I would try a double-broke first, and then if there’s enough room in her mouth, I would try a soft rubber mullen.
