10 points! Why doesn’t bacteria require a nucleus?
I’m doing a biology project and have to tell why the nucleus is the most important of all cell organelles.. (it is obviously the most important.) So I need flaws of a nucleus so I can know what my competitors might throw at me and why don’t bacteria need nuclei to survive. Thanks.. 10 points best answer
The nucleus is actually DNA and structural protein and enzymes surrounded by two layers of phospholipid membrane. The DNA holds the blueprints for all the proteins being produced in that cell. Those protein may be the building blocks of the cell or enzymes that do all the work in the cell.
The DNA is huge, humans have 23 pairs of DNA in the nucleus and each strand is an inch or more long. To fit all that in the nucleus the DNA must be packed… like a ball of yarn. So that’s an awful lot of DNA in a single nucleus, all that DNA could get tangled up inside the cell so it’s being kept out of harms way inside the two layers of membrane that make the nucleus.
The bacterial DNA does not need to be put away. First, it’s rather small and each bacterium has only one DNA. It won’t get tangled up. Plus it’s not a strand, it’s actually circular, it has no ends and is a lot easier to handle. It is however, bound to the cell membrane so it doesn’t move around too much. It needs to keep in place and do all the work it is supposed to.
Bottom line… the nucleus is the most important part of a cell cause it holds the information on how the cell will build itself up. Without it, nothing can get done.
