Pony Driving
What sort of things can you do with a pony you cant ride?
I am getting a shetland from my friend and want to know what things you can do with them because I’m too big to ride him. I have already considered driving, but its too expensive. What else can you do?
I have a foal which I have owned since he was 6 months and he is now approaching becoming a yearling in late January/ February. We will eventually break him in when he is 3 years old but I’m not in too much of a hurry for that. When I first bought him (he was my first pony) I thought it would be awful having to wait 2 1/2 years to actually get on him and just sit on him let alone ride him! But if he’s taught me anything he’s taught me that there is way more to horses than just riding. I knew that before but I never really practiced it. I went down to the stables to help out and helped with all the poo picking and mucking out but then I’d always ride so all the rest seemed like chores but since I’ve had Shade (my horse) I’ve learned more to appreciate the other side of horses and especially the bond between you and your horse. I probably prefer now walking through the countryside with him than riding. It teaches you the way your horse talks to you and makes you and him/her connect more. But it doesn’t just stop there especially because your Shetland is and older horse and isn’t just a baby like mine. You can do in hand shows, teach him tricks and loads of other things. Riding and driving isn’t just the only thing you can do with horses – it may be the most popular but not the only thing! Have fun with your new pony and remember there are no limits to what you two can do together!
Ps. I do agree with everyone else though about the laminitis, Shetlands are probably the most prone breed to it and if you think driving is expensive a pony with laminitis is too and also very painful to the horse and if he has had it in the past then I would advise you not to get him)
